The Squale Drass Periscope

A SQUALE-DRASS COLLABORATION WATCH FOR UNDERSEA VEHICLE ENTHUSIASTS

The story of Drass runs parallel with mankind’s passion for exploration of our oceans. Established in 1927 in Livorno, Italy, and headquartered in what has become one of the largest seaports in both the Mediterranean and the world, Drass’s unique history and extensive achievements have kept them at the forefront of manufacturing subaqueous technology.

DRASS

Synonymous with some of the most influential maritime inventions of the twentieth century—they produced some of the earliest submarines, atmospheric diving suits which would revolutionize deep-sea exploration in the 1920s and 930s, and the legendary human “maiali” torpedoes of World War II.

Today, Drass, in addition to offering a range of totally revamped traditional vehicles, continues to produce the most advanced vehicles for elite navies around the world.

Wanting to rely exclusively on high-grade professionals for the creation of every element of supply to their crews, Drass decided to entrust Squale with the task of creating a timepiece suitable for submarine operators. Hence, from Drass's requests came the Drass Periscope model, made as a watch in supply to its employees, and not distributed commercially.

To celebrate this supply, Squale, in agreement with Drass, has decided to market a model called the 'Squale Periscope'. The model in question has one difference from the one supplied to Drass, namely the dial: to underline the synergy between the two companies, it was decided to offer both the Squale logo and the Drass logo.

All the features of this watch are the same as those of the Drass Periscope being supplied to Drass, making this watch available not only to professionals, but to all undersea and military enthusiasts.

Based on the design of Squale's most acclaimed and iconic watch, the Squale Master of the 1970s, the Squale Periscope features a specially designed 120-click unidirectional bezel in matt black steel with no numerals and bears the Drass logo as well as a stylized submarine at six o'clock on the dial.

The Drass company also asked Squale to make an additional device to accompany the watch, which is in fact a rubber cap, to be specially applied to the bezel of the watch. An apparently innocuous device, but one that conceals a great purpose. An accidental collision of the watch with another metal part in the narrow spaces of the submarine would risk creating an interference. The rubber cap, made in Italy from highly resistant material, can be easily attached to or removed from the watch depending on the submariner operator's needs.

The 316L stainless steel case with an IP Black finish and dimensions of 42mm x 16mm is a revival of the historic Squale “Master” case. This model was one of the first cases designed by Charles Von Büren in the 60s. Over time, the Squale Master became an established name in the world of diving enthusiasts, as famous freedivers such as Enzo Maiorca and Jacques Mayol chose it as their reliable companion during their underwater adventures.

This case features a screw-in case back and signed screw-down crown at the 4 o´clock position which is recessed and well protected against unwanted impact. Due to the recessed crown and the elegant flowing design of the case the watch is exceptionally comfortable to wear even on a smaller wrist. A helium valve is also incorporated into the case, ensuring a water resistance of up to 500 meters or 50 atmos.

The matt black hand-painted dial with the distinctly designed applied blue luminescent indices of Swiss Superluminova BGW9 provides excellent legibility in all lighting conditions.

The smooth, coin-shaped 120 click uni-directional bezel has a "bund" style matt black steel insert. This "bund" bezel is another unique feature of the Squale Periscope, with only one triangle in SuperLuminova and no other markings. Exclusively intended for use by military diving corps, it was born out of the need to monitor the hours spent on very long dives, and not the minutes as in traditional underwater-use bezels. The flat scratch-resistant sapphire crystal is enhanced with an anti-reflective treatment for better visibility.

The Squale Periscope is powered by a Swiss made Sellita SW 200-1 Elaboré automatic movement which provides mechanical reliability and accuracy under the toughest circumstances.

This watch comes with a high quality black sailcoth strap with signed buckle as well as a black tropic rubber strap. Three rubber bezel caps are also supplied and it is packaged in an IP67 certified protective box.
