Twin-crown dive watches with rotatable chapter rings were the rage in the 1960s because the rotable chapter ring can be used to mark a second time zone. These watches were known as "super compressors". Gruppo Gamma's Chrononaut collection, rolled out in 2017, seeks to revive the design of twin-crown watches while retaining the signature styling cues of Gruppo Gamma.
The Chrononaut features a brushed 316L stainless steel case with a rotatable chapter ring and sapphire exhibition window caseback. It has twin screw-lock crowns (one is used to rotate the chapter ring) and is water resistant to 300 metres or 30 atmos. Vintage super compressor watches typically have cross-hatched crowns so these were reproduced on the Chrononaut.
The thick scratch-resistant vintage style box-shaped sapphire crystal with underside anti-reflective coating protects the matte black dial with thick painted markers in Swiss SuperLumiNova. The dial has silver colored hour and minute hands and a red seconds hand, filled with Swiss SuperLumiNova.
The Chrononaut is powered by a reliable Swiss made STP1-11 movement made by Swiss Technology Production SA. It has a power reserve of 44 hours. The rotor is signed and decorated with Côtes de Genève and the rest of the movement is decorated with perlage.
Two straps come with the Chrononaut - a black tropic rubber strap and a canvas strap. In addition the watch is supplied with a travel pouch and screwdriver for strap changing.
The Chrononaut is a modern interpretation of a classic look that Gruppo Gamma pulls off like no other and combined with their high level of finishing and quality components makes it an absolute delight to wear.
